thanksgiving was nice
ate a good meal, saw my family, took tons of good pictures in the morning, got some new clothes, plus plenty of sleep.

i got back last night around 8 and spent a good hour and a half cleaning my room, everything is perfect except for some papers on my desk, but i've convinced myself that they need to be there. after that i saw the incredibles and had late night appetizers with emily. we kind of got chicken hands instead of fingers, and i should have known better than to order fried calamari at 'jack's restaurant' but at least the mozzarella sticks were good.. kind of. looks like its time to go to work. 6 hours of making fun of people with vlado.

there was an emergency this morning, this is how events transpired:

(Erik and I talking about starting our papers)

DPMO11 (2:12:35 AM): alright, gonna try to hack this out quickly (yea, right!)
mpc t e (2:12:43 AM): ha
mpc t e (2:12:48 AM): im gonna try that too
mpc t e (2:19:24 AM): i think im gonna take a nap
mpc t e (2:19:26 AM): im pretty tired
DPMO11 (2:24:14 AM): yeah, just don't forget it's due at 9am

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Auto response from mpc t e (2:24:14 AM): hopefully this little nap doesn't get out of control.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

HaPiFeEt18 (3:30:48 AM): my naps always turn into multi hour extravaganzas
HaPiFeEt18 signed off at 3:38:40 AM.
HaPiFeEt18 signed on at 3:52:39 AM.
HaPiFeEt18 signed off at 4:05:13 AM.
HaPiFeEt18 signed on at 7:44:59 AM.
mpc t e (7:51:35 AM): yeah, i fucked myself over
mpc t e (7:51:39 AM): an hour turned into 6
mpc t e (7:51:45 AM): and i have a 3 page paper due at 9
HaPiFeEt18 (7:51:47 AM): omg maatt
HaPiFeEt18 (7:51:51 AM): i almost wanted to call you
HaPiFeEt18 (7:51:55 AM): cuz i know how that story goes

so between 7:51 and 8:45, i wrote a three page paper on Yann Arthus-Bertrand, got dressed, and printed it. i should never even bother attempting to write at night anymore, especially after working 9-9 during the day. the paper was ok, definitely good enough for a photo class.

i came across a good, comprehensive list of steven wright quotes. perhaps the best i've ever seen.
http://www.cis.upenn.edu/~udani/humor/stevenwright.html

here are some personal highlights:

I went to a general store. They wouldn't let me buy anything specifically.

I have the world's largest collection of seashells. I keep it on all the beaches of the world... Perhaps you've seen it.

Right now I'm having amnesia and deja vu at the same time. I think I've forgotten this before.

I got a new shadow. I had to get rid of the other one... It wasn't doing what I was doing.

Four years ago... No, it was yesterday. Today I... No, that wasn't me. Sometimes I... No, I don't.

They say we're 98% water. We're that close to drowning... (Picks up his glass of water from the stool...) I like to live on the edge...

The other day, I was walking my dog around my building... on the ledge. Some people are afraid of heights. Not me, I'm afraid of widths.

I like to pick up hitchhikers. When they get in the car I say, "Put on your seat belt. I want to try something. I saw it once in a cartoon, but I think I can do it."

today is about to get real ridiculous...

i'm just a broke ass fool, tryin to play it cool
workin two jobs, and kinda goin to school

if i keep getting these credit card upgrades, i'll be rich in no time...

i'm sick of this in between state. its all a financial thing. soccer debts need to be resolved, along with bills, and other purchases. it all needs to be dealt with, and quick, so i can think about something else. tomorrow seems like a good day for this, because tonight i have to write a paper on a photographer and let christina steal music off of my computer for her ipod. and, of course, theres always crazy horse. i know its monday, but mondays have been pretty ridiculous lately, and its the monday before thanksgiving which makes it special somehow. back to the paper - i have to write a 3-5 pg paper on any photographer. i'm gonna write it on the Earth From Above photos by Yann Arthus-Bertrand.

i'm sure everyone has seen it ona bookshelf or coffee table somewhere. it's a fairly recent collection of aerial photographs from around the world. its not obscure, or particularly artistic, its more like the kind of art that sam's club would deal, but i really like the pictures, and all i need to write about is how i like the pictures and why. of course the answer is "the blue water is so pretty." i just have to make that stretch to three pages.

the first contact i had with these photos was the summer of 2002 when i was working at film and tape works in chicago. i would take the train to the city from joliet every monday, wednesday, and friday. we always caught the 6:25 train from joliet, which got us to union station around 7:30. sometimes we'd get a ride, but either way, we'd be downtown by 8. i never really had to be at work before 8:30. so i would just make the crosstown trek from union station to the mag mile at a very leisurely pace. i would never let myself get into a specific routine as far as my route went. it was pretty much different every day, except when i wanted food from a certain place or if i had to go to the bank. i wanted to get to know all the streets of downtown by walking different ways every day, but eventually i ended up going pretty much the same way.

i ended up just walking straight east towards the lake, until i hit what is now millenium park. they had just built the ice rink area, and they put up the earth from above photo exhibit. every day i worked, i'd go check out a few more pictures, until i examined every single one and read every caption displayed. there were 3 foot by 4 foot prints up on easels, i'm not sure how many, at least 150 i'd say. seeing the pictures so large is much better than seeing them in the book, but you still get the idea of seeing beautiful, natural settings that you will never see with your own eyes because you won't be in a helicopter in these remote places. i'm glad this guy was though. i'll have to continue this later.. but i probably won't...

here's the script i wrote for a minor grant:

http://www.geocities.com/mpcshaikuniverse/speedreaderG.txt

it was "too safe" and "fails to push the boundaries of what's possible in NU student filmmaking." if that's what they think, that's fine, but, in my opinion, student film looks like student film because everyone tries to do impossible things that only professionals could accomplish. the best student films work within the constraints of what is possible and execute it well. there is a merit to attempting the impossible and being creatively ambitious, but it all goes to waste if your project is a piece of shit (9 times out of 10 (10 being Osato)). it's not like that script wasn't ambitious at all, there was still a lot going on, i was going to make the camera and the visuals really dynamic, and rewrites could have only made it better, but there are no special effects, or special costumes, or people dying, etc. i haven't read the scripts that beat it out, so i can't really say anything about them. at least good people got them. stay tuned till june for how they turn out.

mpc t e (1:15:57 AM): nope
iRiteThings (1:16:05 AM): wow
mpc t e (1:16:16 AM): However, your project seemed "too safe" when compared to other
candidates. Though it would probably be a positive learning experience
for those involved, it fails to push the boundaries of what's possible
in NU student filmmaking.
mpc t e (1:16:39 AM): more like, it was too possible to accomplish successfully
iRiteThings (1:16:48 AM): wow
iRiteThings (1:16:50 AM): i hate them

i was going to tell this story in here, but i told it to parkie and im a big fan of copy/paste.

mpc t e (12:25:47 AM): we ordered a pizza from papa johns with a 'free pizza' coupon that we had already used (the guy forgot to take it last time).
mpc t e (12:26:16 AM): the coupon expired a month ago, but we tried to use it anyways.
mpc t e (12:26:43 AM): will wanted to cover up the expiration date with a sticker on an envelope addressed to me
mpc t e (12:26:58 AM): so him and angela glued it on top of my address with the expiration date
mpc t e (12:27:07 AM): and then we rehearsed the whole plan
mpc t e (12:27:19 AM): angela was gonna give hi m the money cause shes a girl
mpc t e (12:27:36 AM): she was going to meet him halfway up the staircase
mpc t e (12:27:41 AM): and hand him the money
p a r k i e 425 (12:28:01 AM): so did it work
mpc t e (12:28:02 AM): then andy was supposed to take the pizza/sprite and they were supposed to walk away.
mpc t e (12:28:16 AM): they were supposed to make the guy forget about taking th e coupon
mpc t e (12:28:20 AM): so we could use it again
mpc t e (12:28:42 AM): but just as they were walking away, angela rips the coupon out of her pocket and says 'do you need this?'
mpc t e (12:28:54 AM): and will and i were listening from the doorway and we went crazy
mpc t e (12:29:03 AM): the guy was like' oh yeah, i need the coupon.'
mpc t e (12:29:07 AM): and he took it
mpc t e (12:29:29 AM): we couldnt believe she messed up after we had rehearsed keeping the coupon in her pocket
mpc t e (12:29:43 AM): so then we get upstairs
mpc t e (12:29:50 AM): and we are laughing
mpc t e (12:29:58 AM): when we realize they got our order wrong
mpc t e (12:30:22 AM): we were supposed to get 2 2liter bottles of sprite, but they only gave us one
mpc t e (12:30:45 AM): and we couldnt call them back and complain when we just passed off a phony coupon
mpc t e (12:30:56 AM): when we had already used it twice
mpc t e (12:31:08 AM): this all blew my mind
p a r k i e 425 (12:31:08 AM): haha angela's dumb
mpc t e (12:31:27 AM): yeah, it was so funny though
mpc t e (12:32:27 AM): when will and i saw the only one bottle of sprite i yelled 'but we cant...!!!!'
mpc t e (12:32:37 AM): and he yelled 'fuck, its a gray area!'

we went on to eat the pizza and drink the sprite. we should have gotten two of each. we watched the end of chasing amy and it was really bad, i dont remember it being that bad. will made a really funny noise when thinking about the idea of a triple decker nutella, marshmellow fluff, and peanut butter sandwich.

other funny quotes of the day
"i just saw a huge dog."

i havent written in here since the election.. the soccer party was great, bridger and i beat lance and his friend in beer pong. the rest of the night was fun, except for when tom made me look like a fool, and himself probably too. thanks again, tom. met a couple new people, and just chillin with the guys was fun, since that doesnt usually happen for some reason. before that i played halo 2 for 4 hours and before that i worked for 6 hours. before that was friday, and i dont really remember what happened specifically, but i know a lot of stuff did.

both grants are decided on tuesday - make it or break it tuesday. so on tuesday i'll be makin it or breakin it. either way, im sure ill have something to say about it once all that is over with.

this is pretty clever (discovery credit goes to Erika):
The Republican National Committee announced today that the Republican Party is changing its emblem from an elephant to a condom. The committee chairman explained that the condom more clearly reflects the party's stance today, because a condom accepts inflation, halts production ,destroys the next generation, protects a bunch of pricks, and gives you a sense of security while you're actually getting screwed.

i almost shaved my head today. new beginnings and such. but i realized i might want to have hair since its cold out. also, i could style it, and that sounds like fun.

this is appropriate - from merriam-webster (www.m-w.com)

The Word of the Day for November 3 is:

tergiversation \ter-jiv-er-SAY-shun\ noun
*1 : evasion of straightforward action or clear-cut
statement : equivocation
2 : desertion of a cause, position, party, or faith

people hated bush
people loved bush
i'm sure a few people hated kerry.
but no one loved kerry

need i remind you what radio raheem taught us about LOVE and HATE?
i suppose he was talking about a universal love/hate relationship which would ultimately displace bush from office, in the name of love for the world, but consider this the practical application... i guess.

at least it seems legit so far. look at it this way, maybe we will conquer some unsuspecting island nation and acquire a new vacation hotspot. that would be sweet.

i'm an INTJ, but i frequently transcend my personality type...
(learn about my inner workings here http://typelogic.com/intj.html)

i really meant to update this after the last weekend of soccer games (a week ago) but i guess i had better things to do. actually, i probably didnt and was just sucked into the abyss that is created by getting a bunch of work done. after papers, quizzes, and soccer being over with, i didnt really feel like doing anything besides watching tv/movies, playing socom, drinking orange juice/beer, etc. lets hope thats over with. the orange juice can carry over to this week though.

rained allll day. good thing i worked 9-9. gonna watch goodfellas tonight finally. got some good movies today- the five obstructions, dead presidents, chungking express, return of the jedi (for the documentary), ghost dog, and my best fiend. these ones gotta get will and i from zero to script in a few days. i think it will happen.

back to soccer. it rained the whole way to ferris state, which is a long way i might add. when we got there, the field was flooded and we had to decide if we wanted to play or not. we decided that since we drove 4 or 5 hours to get there that we would have to play even though the field was underwater and the rain showed no sign of letting up. what followed was either the most fun or least fun game of my life, it was definitely the wettest. both goals were guarded by a puddle that stretched the entire field around the 18 yard mark. in order to get past it you had to dribble or pass over it. before we put a few in the net, the game was frustrating, but after that it was just pure comedy.

the funniest moment was when tom won the greatest tackle ever. the ball had stopped in a puddle around the half line. tom and a kid from the other team were about ten yards away from the ball on either side. they both got huge running starts and both connected as hard as they could with the ball at the exact same time. both of them fell down from the force of each others kicks and the ball shot straight up in the air, higher than i've ever seen a soccer ball go, it looked like a baseball. it finally fell about 40 yards from where they kicked it, and it was determined that tom won, because the ref gave them the throw in. good work, tom.

we ended up winning 3-0 as we usually do when we are not losing 3-0. i put the third one in to tie brandon, chris, and octave with 3 goals on the season. we stayed the night in kalamazoo, not in the bungalos this time. some of us went to see team america - some of us fell asleep while watching it... it was ok cause it was my second time. fuck yeah.

i tried all weekend to watch slacker. whenever i had some free time i put it in, and every single time, i fell asleep. i couldhave felt wide awake and would still pass out after five minutes of wathcing those people talk about nothing. in the opening minutes, i recognized a lot of what they were saying to be perfect and poignant and everything, but i just didnt give a shit because it was so damn boring. if i didnt have to watch it for class, i would have stopped after the 5th try or so. but i kept trying. continuing from whereever i fell asleep before. whenever i would fall asleep, i would always wake up after the credits when the blue screen was on and the sound was just humming. for some reason, whenever i woke up and was in that post nap daze, i always thought that the blue screen was a part in the movie, where all the characters just look at a humming blue screen for a while. every single time i woke up, i thought this. then i would press rewind and find my place.

i have a short attention span sometimes

this past weekend reminded me why i dont spend all of my weekends drinking and going out. one, the money spent. two, the time spent. three, the recovery time. not to say it wasnt worth it, cause i had a lot of fun, but its not somethng i need to do every thurs, fri, sat. a thurs/sat combination seems like a healthy medium. "just know when i'm gettin one, the others gettin away." gotta stay on top of things, and not let the second half of 2004 keep my creativity down like it has so far. the election is looming large in the near future. maybe we are all holding our 'creative' breaths until we figure out if we should be extremely relieved or extremely pissed off. guess we will know tomorrow..

(fingers crossed)

one last thing. you heard it here first:
tournament edition - episode III - coming in the distant future.
